Thimbles
Half the fun of collecting anything is displaying it so others can
see it. A thimble collection is no different. A display of thimbles can
give character to a table, or a corner of your room.
There are a wide variety of ways to display your thimble collection.
These include thimble display cases, cabinets and racks that hang on the
wall or lie flat, and thimble domes that sit on a table or sideboard.
Cost varies widely. Some displays are made of simple material while
others are made of exotic woods that cost more than the thimbles.
The simplest way to display a collection is a on a thimble rack. These
racks are usually made of wood and have pegs to hold the thimbles. The
racks themselves make a decorative statement because they come in
various shapes such as teddy bears and maps. You can find a theme that
enhances your collection. The advantages of these racks are their
simplicity and price. The disadvantage is the dusting you will have to
do because the thimbles are out in the open.
If you like the shadow box effect, you may want to display your thimble
collection in a case without doors similar to those used to display
miniatures or in a compartmented tray that sits on a table. Some offer a
choice of background color to better set off your collection. These also
come in various sizes at reasonable prices. Although a shadow box is
more protective than a rack, the thimbles are still out in the open.
If you have a more valuable thimble collection, you may want to give it
more protection and a more elegant look by housing it in a thimble
display case with doors. While the glass doors on these cases are
specially designed not to block small items, they do keep out dust and
some have locking mechanisms. These cases are the most expensive of the
possible choices and offer the most protection.
If you only have a few thimbles or want to highlight a group or series
from your collection, your choice might be a glass dome that sits on a
table. The usual dome has two or three shelves, but there are domes that
only accommodate a single thimble. Domes offer the same protection as an
enclosed display case and some of them lock.
Any collection is a great conversation starter. Whatever method you
decide to use to display your thimble collection, by all means let them
decorate your home so that others can enjoy them.
